Jarred Hancox’s Surf Guide Update 30th July – 11th August 2008

July 30th was to be my first day as a surf guide at Bobby’s G-Land Surf Camp. This same day I was going to be watching the top 44 surfers of the world competing at Padang Padang. While it would have been good to watch them getting barrelled at the ‘Balinese Pipeline’ I also thought it better me in the barrel than watching one of them in the barrel!

While on Bobby’s fast boat trip that leaves Kuta at 6am, the 10ft @ 16second swell was apparent! Lucky there was no wind, and the travel was quite smooth. Being my first time on the fast boat, it was amazing to see the entire southern coast of the South Eastern tip of Java. Along the way there were big rogue right hander’s peeling off, and a huge barge that is stranded up on the reef. This barge looks like a giant break wall from a distance, it is enormous, and an awesome sight. After 2 hours we rounded the western tip of the peninsula and cruised near the g-land line-up, being sure to keep a good distance from the Bombie which had some solid sets.

My highlight of this first day was an uncrowded (3 guys out for an hour) mid-afternoon session on the low tide at Money Tree’s. Big 6-8 foot sets were coming through and doubling up, throwing out some big chunky barrels. I was taking near air drops on my 6’8” and pulling straight into to some sick barrels... Got 6 really good barrels this session, 2 of them unmade, yet the unmade ones at g-land are sometimes the best, as you’ve been sitting in the tube so long!

Over the next week we had a couple of swells that would give a few 6ft sets our way. Money Tree’s was the place to be, on the higher tides it had long winding walls with some super hollow sections down the reef a bit, and on the low tides there were a few thick barrels on ‘The Ledge’ for those game enough to have a dig. For those who didn’t fancy big grinding lefts, they would go down and have a ball at Tiger Tracks, which is a 10minute drive in the camp jungle car (“Grandong”). This offers a super fun hotdog type right hander that is safe to take your girlfriend or kids too.

There were a few small days on the main break also, where it would only be head high on the sets. Then Kong’s had softer, slower, super fun waves at the top of the point. Kong’s is a user friendly wave that anyone can surf on the smaller swells.

Being my first time at Bobby’s camp, I was blown away by the quality of the food and facilities. Every meal I could choose what I wanted to have, and every 3rd night we would have a delicious Indonesian style buffet. You really get what you pay for here. It really is the 5* of G-Land. When I wasn’t surfing I was keeping occupied on the internet, watching DVD’s, playing pool and table tennis, reading, taking a nap, or drinking sunset ice cold beers on the beach with all the new friends I am constantly making. It’s such a good vibe at the camp and you get to meet many cool people.

Having spent over 6 months in G-Land over the past 6 years I use all this experience and knowledge of this place to help out the new guests. I am ready to answer questions guests may have at any time. I explain the layout of the reef, where to paddle out, how skilled you need to be for the various conditions, what’s going on in the camp, and many other things that are useful to know, especially for guests that have never been to G-Land before. So maybe I will see you in the near future and be able to help make your stay and experience of G-Land one you won’t forget.

Unfortunately I had to go back to Bali on the 11th August for 1 week to renew my Visa. My last day of surfing on the 10th was superb. Perfect 6ft Money Tree’s, I surfed for 6 hours this day, and got some unreal waves! There were wide sets swinging down to Launching Pads & Speedies also, and a small crew were having a go down there. But I didn’t want a bar of it because the tide peaked at 1.5m, and surfing a wave through to Speedies on anything under a 2m tide is dancing with the devil. Even on a really high tide, it’s still a shallow heavy section. High risk, but the rewards of riding a good wave at Speedies is a lifetime memory of getting possibly the most intense, fastest heaviest barrel of your life...

One thing I would like to make people aware of is that the water gets unusually cold at times here. Sometimes it’s nice in boardies and vest, and then other times I wear a full 2mm steamer and i’m just right. A good quality spring suit is highly recommended to be comfortable, and provide good reef protection as an added bonus. Reef Booties are almost compulsory here on the lower tides for getting in and out of the water. They’ll save your feet if you wipe-out and scrape your feet on the reef too.

Sincerely,

Bobby Radiasa
